Weightron’s Weighbridges Play Vital Role at New Wood Recycling & Reprocessing Plant

    Weightron Admin|10 November, 2023

A twin weighbridge system, supplied by Weightron Bilanciai, is at the heart of Timberpak Ltd’s new wood recycling and reprocessing facility, following a multi-million-pound investment in the six acre site on the outskirts of Leeds. The streamlined layout of the site features the latest recycling technology and the bespoke loading bay offers safe and efficient loading.

Timberpak Ltd’s director Mark Hayton is delighted with the new site: “A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in the project. Between us we have created an industry-leading wood recycling processing site. The investment reinforces our commitment to make more from wood and it will benefit generations to come by continuing to store the carbon absorbed by the recycled wood during its growth. We have a long standing working relationship with Weightron going back more than 20 years. Their engineers worked closely with us from the outset of this new project and their experience and expertise have ensured we have a highly efficient and safe vehicle weighing management system.”

The facility is capable of recycling 150,000 tonnes of waste wood per year, with the potential for this to increase by 50% as the demand for wood-based materials continues. The recycled wood is used by Timberpak Ltd’s parent company EGGER (UK) Ltd to produce carbon negative chipboard panels at its production sites in Northumberland and East Ayrshire.

Titan Weighbridge for Timerpark Ltd in Leeds

The ultra low-profile 50 tonne Titan weighbridges, fitted with IP69K stainless steel digital load cells, act as critical control points for weighing vehicles arriving and leaving the site. The weighbridges have large external RD100 digital weight displays for drivers and DD700 touch screen weight indicators in the gatehouse. The latter are fitted with MPP memory cards and link with the site’s management system to provide paperless weighing transactions. This means, from an important health and safety point, drivers do not need to leave their cabs whilst on site.

The Titan surface weighbridge is designed for reliable, high-capacity vehicle weighing in busy working environments. Weightron have been manufacturing this traditional one-piece, side-beam weighbridge design for over 40 years and the fully welded, drive-through steel structure is designed to withstand very high concentrated loads and continual use.

The deep profile, robust longitudinal beams offer an extremely stiff structure. The varying concentration of lateral steel beams along the length of the weighbridge deck takes into account high loading areas and the over-sized longitudinal side beams are specified for minimum deflection along the length of the deck. Installation is very straightforward, only requiring a level concrete base of sufficient size and strength.

Timberpak Ltd believe the new plant offers the best wood recycling facilities in the UK. A sustainable approach has been taken at every opportunity, including solar panels across the roof of the main building and a dust suppression system. Health and safety is top priority for the site, which has thermal cameras for stock heat control and a one-way traffic management system.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is a Weighbridge?

A Weighbridge (US truck scale) is a large, low-profile scale used to weigh both road and off-road vehicles (rigid and articulated lorries, dumper trucks, vans etc) and their contents. The load carried by the vehicle is calculated by weighing the vehicle both empty and loaded. The main weighbridge deck structure can be constructed from steel, pre-stressed concrete or steel-concrete composite.

      What is a Pit-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed inside a pit, these weighbridges sit flush with the road surface. As they don’t require ramps, they take up less road surface compared to surface mount installations. Suitable for sites with restricted access.

      What is a Surface-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed above ground, these weighbridges incorporate steel or concrete ramps to allow vehicles to drive on and off. One advantage is that the ramps slow down vehicle entry speed. Less foundation works are required when compared with pit mount installations. Surface designs are suitable for temporary/portable installations when used with steel ramps.
