New Simpler Recycling England – New Requirements & Updates

In the UK, businesses have to comply with numerous pieces of environmental legislation, which are designed to ensure that sustainable best practices are being followed across the country.

One of the most comprehensive areas of environmental business legislation is recycling and waste management. The government requires businesses to manage, store and dispose of their waste in conscientious and safe ways, which minimise the associated environmental impact.

To these aims, the government has just introduced an updated piece of legislation, known as the Simpler Recycling reforms.

These changes will help to standardise and improve the management of recyclable waste across the country.

What are the Simpler Recycling reforms?

The Simpler Recycling reforms consist of updates to existing legislation.

As it stands, recycling collection procedures mean that homes and businesses could have to have as many as 7 bins (to compartmentalise recyclable materials, so that they could be gathered separately).

With this initiative, more streamlined collections will be introduced, so that it is easier for homes and businesses to dispose of recyclable waste, and to help waste collectors to do their job more efficiently.

Now, by default, local authorities and waste collectors can unify certain waste streams.

The aims of Simpler Recycling are to reduce confusion, improve recycling rates, remove the need for excessive bins and waste sorting and increase recycling rates, thereby maximising environmental benefits.

These changes will apply to premises including:

• All households
• Businesses
• Schools
• Hospitals
• Public sector buildings
• Other relevant non-domestic premises

What do businesses need to start doing differently?

With the introduction of Simpler Recycling, businesses (and other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees) will need to separate and recycle specified material types from their waste.

As a new universal standard, recyclable waste will now need to be disposed of in 4 containers:

• Residual (non-recyclable) waste
• Food waste (this can be combined with garden waste)
• Waste paper and card
• Other dry recyclable materials (e.g. plastic, metal and glass)

These can be disposed of in bags, bins or stackable boxes.

Large businesses must start segregating these materials into appropriate containers by the 31st March 2025.

For businesses with less than 10 full-time equivalent employees, they will still have to implement these changes, but their deadline is not until 31 March 2027.

The government believes that its latest waste management reforms (Simpler Recycling, Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging and the Deposit Return Scheme for Drinks Containers) will result in around £11.8 billion worth of greenhouse gas emissions savings.

Critically, it will also go a long way towards helping the government achieve its aim of recycling 65% of municipal waste by 2035.
