Efficient Vehicle Weighing Ensures Smooth Waste Fuel Plant Operation

An automated weighbridge management system, designed and installed by Weightron Bilanciai, is playing a key role at the new 11000 m2 waste processing facility in Hull, owned and operated by waste fuel specialist Geminor.
The £10 million facility is capable of producing 150,000 tonnes of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) per annum. Part of this will come from the annual treatment of around 70,000 tonnes of municipal waste from Geminor’s contract with Hull City council, which runs until at least 2030. The remaining tonnage will be sourced from third party commercial waste sources.
Instead of going to land fill, Hull’s domestic waste collections will be transported directly to the facility for processing into pelleted RDF, a large proportion of which will then be supplied to local energy from waste facilities.
Weighing materials entering and leaving site is a critical part of the plant management. Throughout the project Weightron worked directly with main engineering contractor Keltbray and Geminor’s software engineers, ensuring a fully seamless integrated system.
The weighbridge installation consists of two SB 18 metre, 50 tonne capacity, pit-mounted weighbridges, fitted with CPD stainless steel digital load cells. The vehicle weighing process in and out of the site is controlled by Weightron’s powerful Winweigh software. This controls the integrated ANPR cameras, traffic lights, traffic barriers and dual height DD2060 driver-operated terminals. These touch screen terminals, fitted with RFID card readers, guide drivers through the weighing process, without the need for them to leave their cabs.
The dual height arrangement accommodates different height vehicle cabs. Winweigh integrates directly with Geminor’s Gemisoft transport and document handling system.

As Weightron’s Sales Director Nick Burley concludes: “We have extensive experience in the design and installation of such systems. The overall design of the weighbridge management system ensures efficient vehicle movement in and out of the site. Using ANPR and RFID technologies significantly speeds up the weighing process, whilst providing vital data for Geminor. Working directly with key parties in such projects optimises reliability and operational efficiencies.”
