‘New for Old’ Weighbridges Provide Cost-Effective Replacements

    Weightron Admin|31 May, 2023

The team at Weightron Bilanciai install ‘New for old’ weighbridges that provide cost-effective replacements, in two quite different applications.

Weightron Bilanciai have recently replaced aging Avery weighbridges in two quite different applications. Both old weighbridges have been replaced with Weightron’s low-profile, Titan drive-through model. The installations are at a hazardous liquid waste recycling centre in Staffordshire and a quarry in Norfolk.

Both weighbridges have been custom-built to fit the existing foundations. This reduces installation costs for the customer and minimises site disruption. At the recycling centre, the removal of the old weighbridge and installation of the new one posed a number of challenges, primarily due to the tight access at the site. To ensure minimum site disruption, Weightron provided the crane hire to carry out the work. The 15 metre, 50 tonne capacity Titan replacement includes new steel ramps, Weightron’s stainless steel CPR load cells and DD700 weight indicator. The system has been interfaced with the existing Avery driver terminals to reduce installation costs for the operator.

At the quarry, the replacement 50 tonne surface weighbridge, measuring 16m x 3m, was designed to fit the existing foundations and concrete ramps. The single piece deck is mounted on Weightron’s CPD stainless steel digital load cells, connected through to a new DD700 indicator. The fully weld-sealed IP69K CPD load cells, with rodent proof cabling, are ideal for such harsh operating environments.

The removal of the old deck and installation of the new Titan took less than 24 hours. Pre-matching of the digital load cell characteristics prior to installation significantly reduces calibration times. In both applications, Legal-for-trade certification was carried out using Weightron’s calibration truck and UKAS traceable weights.

The Titan surface weighbridge is designed for reliable, high-capacity vehicle weighing in harsh working environments. Weightron have been manufacturing this traditional one-piece, side-beam weighbridge design for over 40 years and the fully welded, drive-through steel structure is designed to withstand very high concentrated loads and continual use.

The deep profile, robust longitudinal beams offer an extremely stiff structure. The varying concentration of lateral steel beams along the length of the weighbridge deck takes into account high loading areas and the over-sized longitudinal side beams are specified for minimum deflection along the length of the deck.

Weightron’s Regional Sales Manager Richard Stokes is clear on his company’s strengths: “Unlike many of our competitors, we have the design and manufacturing versatility to build bespoke sizes to fit existing foundations for both pit and surface weighbridges. Where applicable, special load cell mounting assemblies are designed to accommodate older pit designs. Overall, this is very beneficial for our customers.”

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is a Weighbridge?

A Weighbridge (US truck scale) is a large, low-profile scale used to weigh both road and off-road vehicles (rigid and articulated lorries, dumper trucks, vans etc) and their contents. The load carried by the vehicle is calculated by weighing the vehicle both empty and loaded. The main weighbridge deck structure can be constructed from steel, pre-stressed concrete or steel-concrete composite.

      What is a Pit-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed inside a pit, these weighbridges sit flush with the road surface. As they don’t require ramps, they take up less road surface compared to surface mount installations. Suitable for sites with restricted access.

      What is a Surface-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed above ground, these weighbridges incorporate steel or concrete ramps to allow vehicles to drive on and off. One advantage is that the ramps slow down vehicle entry speed. Less foundation works are required when compared with pit mount installations. Surface designs are suitable for temporary/portable installations when used with steel ramps.
