Weightron’s Triple Weighbridge Management System Installed in Breedon’s new Ammann ABA 260 UniBatch asphalt mixing plant

A comprehensive triple weighbridge management system, supplied by Chesterfield-based Weightron Bilanciai, is playing an important role at Breedon Group’s new energy-efficient asphalt plant in Mansfield. As part of Breedon Group’s corporate Sustainability Strategy, one of their stated aims is to reduce the impact of their operations on the environment. At the heart of the new £6.7 million operation is Ammann’s ABA 260 UniBatch* asphalt plant and Breedon believe this is the most modern and sustainable asphalt mixing plant to be installed anywhere in the UK in 2022/23.
The three pit-mounted, 18 x 3.5 metre Eurodeck heavy-duty 50 tonne weighbridges are installed underneath the three main filling hoppers. The fully weld-sealed stainless steel CPD digital loadcells connect back via rodent proof cables to three individual touch screen DD700 weight terminals in the control room.
Weightron’s scope of supply also includes a versatile traffic management system, comprising, large LED message boards, traffic lights, ANPR (Automatic Numberplate Recognition) camera
and snap-shot overhead cameras. The local control of the complete system is managed by Weightron’s powerful Winweigh IV software, which integrates directly with the Ammann as1 control system on the Breedon network. The database is programmed to store critical vehicle data including numberplate details, tare weights and haulier.
Drivers arriving at the truck holding area use the intercom phone to check in. Details of the vehicles are then displayed on the large overhead screen showing which weighbridge they should go to. Large electronic display boards above each weighbridge advise drivers which bin to pull under for their required load. Entry-exit to the weighbridges is controlled via traffic lights. Instead of using individually weighed compartments, load out of the finished asphalt products takes place directly over the three weighbridges. The wider 3.5 metre decks allow vehicles to fill from either of the twin loading points above each weighbridge. After filling the system also takes a snapshot of the completed load. The ANPR camera at the exit kiosk identifies the loaded vehicles and initiates the printing of the weighbridge ticket.
This combined weighing and traffic management technology streamlines the weighing/loading process and, together with Breedon’s electronic proof-of-delivery ticketing system, ensures drivers do not need to leave their vehicles at any point.
*The design of the Amman system allows Breedon to utilize up to 50% recycled asphalt planings (RAP) in some of the mixes and can produce lower-temperature warm and cold-mix asphalts as well as the more traditional hot mixes and stone-mastic asphalts (SMAs).
