Upgraded Weighbridge System Brings Important Benefits to Next Distribution

    Weightron Admin|25 September, 2023

Weightron Bilanciai have installed a new driver-operated weighbridge system at the Next distribution centre in South Emsall near Pontefract, Yorkshire.

The 18 metre, 50 tonne Eurodeck SB surface weighbridge is an upgrade replacement for an existing older Weightron weighbridge, which was in the way of an important site expansion programme. The busy site operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and streamlining vehicle movement is vitally important for the efficient running of the operation.

The new weighbridge is being used to weigh and record the waste cardboard packaging. Next have their own card compactor, processing up to 120 tonnes per day and the bales are collected by a major card and paper recycler.

The weighbridge system incorporates an Automatic Numberplate vehicle recognition camera (ANPR), a DD2060 touch screen driver-operated terminal with integral intercom and printer, all controlled via Weightron’s existing Winweigh software system. This integrated design, together with the driver terminal, means that drivers do not need to leave their cabs during the entire weighing process.

The Winweigh database can store critical vehicle data, including vehicle registration, tare weight and haulier. This speeds up the weighing process for registered vehicles. The driver terminal’s large user-friendly touch screen guides the driver through the weighing process and the integral intercom allows drivers to communicate directly with the gatehouse.

Next’s Project Manager Tristan Robbins is pleased with the new system:

“Our working relationship with Weightron goes back more than 10 years and we look forward continuing this strong association. Their engineers worked closely with our contractors to ensure a smooth installation of the new weighbridge. Once this was up and running, we were able to remove the existing weighbridge, ensuring our operation was not affected.   The baled card material is considered by our waste contractor to be the cleanest in the UK and represents an important income stream for us.”

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is a Weighbridge?

A Weighbridge (US truck scale) is a large, low-profile scale used to weigh both road and off-road vehicles (rigid and articulated lorries, dumper trucks, vans etc) and their contents. The load carried by the vehicle is calculated by weighing the vehicle both empty and loaded. The main weighbridge deck structure can be constructed from steel, pre-stressed concrete or steel-concrete composite.

      What is a Pit-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed inside a pit, these weighbridges sit flush with the road surface. As they don’t require ramps, they take up less road surface compared to surface mount installations. Suitable for sites with restricted access.

      What is a Surface-Mounted Weighbridge?

Installed above ground, these weighbridges incorporate steel or concrete ramps to allow vehicles to drive on and off. One advantage is that the ramps slow down vehicle entry speed. Less foundation works are required when compared with pit mount installations. Surface designs are suitable for temporary/portable installations when used with steel ramps.
