    Weightron Engineers Work ‘Round the Clock’ to Carry Out Difficult Weighbridge Replacement within 48-hour Time Period

    Weightron engineers have carried out a challenging weighbridge upgrade at the site of a leading chemical processor, without impacting on the running of the plant. The complex project included the removal of the existing 40-year-old concrete pit weighbridge and the installation of a custom-designed steel replacement that precisely fitted the existing pit foundations.

     

    The removal and install processes were made more complicated by the fact that the 50 tonne, 15 metre weighbridge is located underneath a large out-loading hopper, which had been constructed after the original weighbridge had been installed.

    The customer had set exacting time restraints on the potential supplier to ensure production at the site was not interrupted. The work, including the calibration and stamping of the new weighbridge, had to be carried out within a strict 48-hour window. This meant having to work ‘round the clock’ for two days to meet the deadline.

    Weightron – the only supplier with the all-round capabilities for the challenge

    Weightron were the only supplier who had the all-round capabilities to meet the twin challenges of the tight time restraint and the bespoke nature of the new deck. The company has the engineering skills and manufacturing flexibility to build and install customer-specific weighbridge designs.

    Prior to the installation, Weightron’s engineers worked out a detailed time schedule with the customer to ensure all went according to plan. This involved extensive health and safety considerations, including the drawing up of detailed risk analysis and lift plans, all necessary site inductions and co-ordinated vehicle movement planning.

    Starting at midnight on the first day, the engineers’ initial task was to drill holes in the aging concrete deck and fit lifting slings so that the two sections could be safely lifted out and moved to a storage area. The height-restricted access under the hopper meant that the old deck had to be lifted and then slid out using specialist lifting equipment.

    Once the pit was clear, the special load cell mounting plates could be fitted, ready for the new deck. By lunchtime on the second day the new steel deck sections had been lifted into place and the new digital load cells installed. These were then interconnected at the weighbridge junction box and wired back to the weighbridge office, where the new Flynet50 weight indicator and ticket printer are installed.

    By 4-30 PM the weighbridge was ready for Weightron’s calibration truck weighbridge to verify the system and by 6-00 PM the work had been completed and the area handed back to the customer.
